This is Hackney Marsh. The 'Marsh' used to be a real willo' the wisp type place, the Romans apparently built one of their famous highways across it, and it managed to strand a bunch of Vikings at some point too. It was drained in Medieval times (those crazy Saxons), and spent much of World War II being filled with rubble.
Now its full of football fields (88 or so according to wiki, full size too), you can find footage on youtube of (a lot of soccer) people doing 'freestyle frisbee', and running through the snow barefoot. I've managed to convince two people to come to the Marsh with me...
p.s If Cameron reads this, let it be known that the Knights Templar (Holy Crap!) used the Marsh for Pastures until they were abolished (you know why...).
Oh and there's a fantastic photographer called Stephen Gill who photographs around Hackney Wick, see his work here.
